I'm going to a foreign country for the next two and a half years, and I just bought an iPod on which to put enough music to get through it. I'm ripping all of my CDs, and some of my sister's CDs, and some of my father's CD's, and I still have a fair amount of space to work with. If you were in this situation, what additional CDs or tracks would you buy/borrow/steal? Bonus points if you send/lend them to me.

I am telling you. You're going to a predominantly Muslim country, bring yourself some Christmas carols.

ALSO: another option. iPods can bring movies. I personally would go with just music, but if you want to, you could bring Closer or any other favorites.

put a bunch of shit on there that you don't know but might potentially like. i can also make you a mix, if you want, and send you the songs somehow.

music i would take:

something that reminded me of middle school/high school in a good way (example: early ben folds five).

something that reminded me of my parents/family/girlfriends i liked

something uniquely american (for example: i wouldn't travel abroad without guns n' roses' 'appetite for destruction')

something to be sad to, something on your melancholy days (anything by nick drake, especially 'made to love magic', and joni mitchell's 'blue' are my favorites)

something you love to dance to

a workout/running mix

something to have sex to (don't dream it, be it?)

i love standup comedy on cd, especially eddie izzard's 'dressed to kill' and margaret cho's 'i'm the one that i want'. i have listened to these both a thousand times, and they still make me want to pee myself.

ani difranco and tegan and sara just released new albums; i haven't heard them, but i would want them if i were leaving.

something to fall asleep to (you will need it, even if you've never done that before).

something you love to sing.

any music you would think would make someone from turkmenistan instantly know more about you upon listening.

the soundtrack to your favorite movie(s).

a lot of new stuff you've never heard.

albums that i wouldn't go anywhere without:
most ani difranco albums, because i am cliche like that, but particularly puddle dive and knuckledown
has been by william shatner (no, i am serious, you will love it)
get away from me by nellie mckay
out there live by dar williams
if it was you by tegan and sara
takeoffs and landings by rilo kiley
ben folds live, songs for silverman by ben folds
quiet is the new loud by kings of convenience
queen's greatest hits (but be sure you add 'bohemian rhapsody' and 'under pressure' because they're not on there)
tracy chapman self titled
something by billie holliday (this is KEY)
anything by le tigre, the butchies, ember swift, the weepies, or deb talan

also, i would never leave the country for any length of time without, at the very least, the song 'drive' by melissa ferrick.

i unfortunately cannot burn or send you anything at this time, but i've only listed things that i would very highly recommend if that helps.
